Who Are We?
Your parish council is made up of nine volunteers who you have the chance to elect every four years. We each have to declare any interests we have in the parish and sign a code of conduct to guard against any improper behaviour. We cannot act individually as councillors but need to vote on decisions made collectively. We are the first level of the democratic process in the country. Our local Borough Councillor is James McInnes and he attends most meetings. Training is available for us and we have the professional backup of the Devon Association of Parish Councils. We are ably supported by our long serving clerk, Janet Millership, who manages the administration of the council and receives a small salary for this work.

When Do We Meet?
We meet in the Victory Hall on the third Monday of each month, except August and December, at 7.30pm. Members of the parish are welcome to attend any meetings as observers, although they do not hold any voting rights, and notices of the dates are posted on the village notice board and in the church gate.

What Do We Do?
We exist to discuss community affairs, to represent your interests and to exercise the powers bestowed on us by law. These powers include the power to provide or contribute to cemeteries, community centres, public footpaths, recreation grounds, playing fields, war memorials, public conveniences and other health and safety issues in our environment. We have the right to be notified of planning applications and comment on them.

We set the precept for the parish for each financial year. This is the small sum of money, which is collected by West Devon Borough Council along with your council tax. It has recently been about £3,000 per year but has had to be increased to cover the cost of the public toilets, which we are managing on your behalf for this coming year as a trial. This sum has to cover all our costs including the clerk’s salary. We have to set a budget for each year and manage the money for the benefit of our community. An independent auditor audits the books each year.
